Bettie's Key

Writer: Jean DavisJean Davis

There are many places I’ve gone during the pandemic. One is to Bettie’s church. She has the key. Early on…was it weeks now, or years ago, it seems...when we were ordered to stay-at-home, I talked to her by phone. She had gone by her church to pray. She had the key. She was the only one there. It gave her comfort, she said, to sit in the sanctuary. She could sense God’s presence. She could quiet her spirit there. I may have physically stayed at home these past few months, but in my head, I’ve been to Betty’s church since then.

Longing for a little peace? Come with me to Bettie’s church. I’ll let you in. Want to sit on the back row, or the pew closest to the front? Do you want bow your head and pray, or lift your eyes toward heaven, or stand to your feet with your hands raised, or kneel at the alter? Do you want to cry out to God for mercy? Do you want to lift your voice in praise? Do you want to pray for your people? Do you want to fall on your face before God? Do you want to soak the carpet with tears? Do you want to soak in the quiet in His presence? Do you have some overdue thank-You’s to express?

I’ll leave quietly now. You can stay as long as you like. Keep the key.
