Breaking Bread: Food for Thought

Writer: Jean DavisJean Davis

You know the Scripture about the boy who gave his lunch to Jesus, and how Jesus spoke a blessing over the two fish and five loaves, then broke the loaves and had the disciples distribute the bread with the fish? After feeding five thousand men besides women and children, the disciples gathered up twelve baskets of leftovers. I’ve always thought of the gathering up to mean that God doesn’t waste anything.

Three years ago one of my granddaughters invited me to go to lunch with her and a friend. I had never met this young woman and haven’t seen her since. I don’t remember her name. What I do remember about our conversation is that she had been through a difficult time. Through it all, she said she kept saying, “I trust You, God. I trust You, God,” and she got through it.

Now, three years later, this young woman’s declaration comes to mind. Normally I have the What-If’s under control, but you know... Really! What If…? When those two words threatened to steal my peace this morning, the answer came to me from four words spoken and repeated across the table by a young woman I didn’t know. God doesn’t waste anything. In the face of possible difficult circumstance, I trust You, God. I trust You. I am glad God uses broken pieces to feed others.
