Dear Facebook, in answer to your question . . .

A new acquaintance invited me to join a closed group on Facebook. Words of greeting from Facebook were typed at the top of the page of invitation. “Hi, Jean. How can we help?” Wasn't that amazing? FB cares about me, knows me by name, and wants to lend a helping hand. I had a prompt answer.

Dear Facebook, can one of your staff drop by and help me clean house? Sort through my files, the attic, and the storage unit? Make decisions about what to keep and what to toss, what and where to donate? That would be most helpful. I could also use some help with typing.

What about mop? Paint? Strip the floors and revarnish? Anyone experienced with that? Walk the dog? How are you with carpentry skills? Plumbing? I need a new sofa and a few strong men to haul the old one out and drive it to the dump. I can provide the pick-up. If you’ll give me thirty minutes notice before you come, I’ll comb my hair, put on my shoes and a bra, make a fresh pot of coffee, and if I can get myself in gear, I might even bake you a loaf of banana bread―if we have bananas.

I know my requests for help so far seem selfish, but no one has asked the question before. Anything you can do to lend a helping hand would be appreciated. What about digging wells to provide clean water? That's something I'd like to see done. Solve world hunger. End domestic violence. Provide housing for the homeless.

Excellent and prompt health care is certainly a need our veterans face. Use your influence. You’ve got clout.

Direct people to gratitude rather than griping, to compassion rather than complaint. Change some attitudes for the better. Make people aware of needs and how they can solve them. Give hope. Work some magic. Just knowing that someone, like you, Dear Facebook, cares and is willing to help is heartening. Thanks. And don’t forget to call before you come over.

We are losing what used to mean a lot; true caring for others. Made me think! <3
